The renovation of GOP Essen: From variety theater to artistical theater

Something is currently taking shape at Rottstraße 30 in Essen that does not yet exist anywhere else in Germany: the GOP Artistical Theater. No conversion, no facelift – a completely new building for a completely new kind of show. We tell the story of the new build.

No conversion – a new beginning

The GOP Variety Theater Essen has been writing entertainment history for over 30 years. Now it is taking the next step: the existing building is making way for a completely new build. The new GOP Artistical Theater is being conceived from the ground up for a new show format – the Artistical, a combination of acrobatics, live music and immersive theater experience.

The decision to build a new structure instead of renovating was deliberate: only this way could the technical and architectural requirements of an Artistical be implemented. A space in which stage, technology and audience interlock seamlessly.

What's new? Everything.

The Artistical Theater brings numerous innovations to Essen. The stage counter – the first in Europe – combines gastronomy and stage into an experience. The auditorium was designed specifically for GROOVE: with immersive lighting design, state-of-the-art LED technology and acoustics that make live music tangible. The foyer is not a passageway, but part of the production – the experience begins as soon as you enter the building.

The location: right in the heart of Essen city center

The GOP Artistical Theater remains at Rottstraße 30 – centrally located in Essen city center, just ten minutes from the main train station. The Allbau underground garage is 100 meters away, and the Viehofer Platz and Rheinischer Platz public transport stops are nearby. Its location in the heart of the Ruhr area makes the theater the ideal show venue for visitors from all over North Rhine-Westphalia.

Opening: September 2026

In September 2026, the GOP Artistical Theater opens its doors – with GROOVE as its first production. The show combines international world-class performers, live music and a tribute to the disco era of the 1970s. The premiere weekend is already almost sold out.

A signal for Essen and the Ruhr region

The new GOP building is more than a theater project. It is a statement: the Ruhr region is a place for world-class entertainment. A place where innovation and tradition come together. A place where culture is not preserved, but reimagined.
